Bobbie Parsons
Founder
April 13, 1933 - May 21, 2023
Bobbie Parsons was a pioneering animal welfare advocate whose compassion and dedication helped transform the landscape of animal rescue in Pitt County, North Carolina. Her lifelong commitment to saving animals laid the foundation for much of the organized rescue work that continues in the region today.
In 1978, Bobbie founded the Pitt County Humane Society out of her home, driven by a simple but powerful belief: every animal deserves a chance at life, safety, and love. Long before formal rescue networks and widespread foster programs existed locally, she was actively working to connect abandoned and unwanted animals with caring homes.
In 2002, she expanded her mission by founding Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter (Pitt Friends). Through this organization, Bobbie helped build a structured foster-based rescue system that worked closely with Pitt County Animal Services to increase adoptions, improve animal care, and reduce euthanasia rates for adoptable pets.
Bobbie was known throughout the community for her hands-on advocacy. She regularly promoted shelter animals through local media appearances, community outreach, and personal networking—often advocating for animals others had overlooked. Her work helped inspire a strong volunteer network and foster community awareness around adoption, spay/neuter, and responsible pet ownership.
Over the course of more than four decades of service, Bobbie Parsons helped save and improve the lives of countless animals, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion, action, and community-driven rescue work. Her vision continues to guide Pitt Friends today.

Her legacy lives on in every adoption, every foster home, and every second chance given to an animal in need.
