Finding the right home for each dog is important to us. Our adoption process is designed to make sure both the adopter and the dog are set up for long-term success. We want every adoption to be a great match for everyone involved.
Adoption
Process

Step 1: Apply
Start by completing our adoption application. This helps us learn more about your home, lifestyle, experience with pets, and what type of dog may be the best fit for your family.
Please be as thorough and honest as possible on your application. Veterinary references, landlord approval (if applicable), and other information may be verified during the review process.
Step 2: Meet
Once your application is approved, we’ll arrange a meet-and-greet with the dog. This gives you the opportunity to spend time together, ask questions, and see if it feels like the right fit.
We encourage all household members — including current dogs — to participate in the meet-and-greet whenever possible.
Step 3: Trial Adoption
Many of our dogs benefit from a trial adoption period. This allows the dog time to adjust to your home environment while giving your family the chance to ensure the placement is the right match.
During this time, we stay in touch and are available to answer questions or provide guidance as your new companion settles in.
Step 4: Finalize the Adoption
Once the trial period is successfully completed, the adoption is finalized! Your new family member officially becomes part of your home, and you become part of the Pitt Friends family.
We love receiving updates and photos and are always cheering on our adopted dogs and their families.
Post-Adoption Information
Adopting a dog is a lifelong commitment. Dogs rely on us for love, care, patience, and stability throughout every stage of their lives.
Thank you for choosing rescue and giving a deserving dog a second chance.
Please remember that transitioning into a new home takes time. Many dogs need several weeks — or even months — to fully decompress and feel comfortable in a new environment.
Patience, consistency, and routine are key during this adjustment period.
Training & Routine
Positive reinforcement training, structure, and clear boundaries help dogs succeed. Consistent feeding schedules, potty breaks, exercise, and downtime all help create stability.
Veterinary Care
Regular veterinary care is an important part of responsible pet ownership. We encourage adopters to establish care with a veterinarian soon after adoption and keep all vaccines, preventatives, and wellness visits current.
