Help Reduce the Stray Population by Spaying or Neutering

Animal shelters and rescues are in crisis. Spaying or neutering is more important than ever to help reduce the stray population and rates of euthanasia in shelters. Unfortunately, Pitt County no longer has a low cost spay and neuter option since the closing of Spay Today.

If you're planning to adopt a new pet, please be sure to adopt from a shelter or rescue that includes spay or neuter as part of their adoption process and fees.

If you already have a pet that needs to be spayed or neutered, we recommend Animal Hospital of Pitt County. Our rescue has worked with them for many years and we continue to use them for all of the vet services for our dogs. They are kind, compassionate, and very thorough. They always prioritize quality of life and doing the most good possible for dogs in our community.

Save Your Pet's Life with Heartworm Prevention

True or False:  "My dog is an inside dog.  He/she doesn't need heartworm prevention."

Answer:  FALSE.  Mosquitoes, like most other insects, can get indoors too.  Heartworms are transmitted to dogs and cats by mosquitoes.

Many of the dogs that come into foster care are heartworm positive.  This is a completely preventable disease. One of Pitt Friends' goals is to make the public aware about heartworms, heartworm disease and heartworm prevention.

There are often no signs or symptoms that the animal has been infected.  Monthly prevention is the most effective tool in preventing this horrible disease.  The treatment for a dog with heartworms is painful, and if not monitored properly, deadly.

Speak with your vet about which form of prevention will be best for your pet.

We receive a lot of requests to assist with lost and found pets, as well as surrendering and rehoming dogs. While we wish that we could help with these situations more, we simply do not have the capacity and resources. Our foster homes are always beyond full and there is a long list of dogs at the shelter waiting to be pulled into foster as soon as one gets adopted.
